-Colombo, November 03, 2023-

In recent times, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), has been making significant strides in international politics. His participation in a series of rallies and events in the USA has garnered widespread attention. He’s not limited his reach to these Western nations, as he’s also traveled through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, inviting Sri Lankan citizens residing abroad to unite for the betterment of their homeland. These global campaigns have positioned him as a compelling figure in Sri Lankan politics with influence both at home and abroad.

Global Engagement vs. Homebound Politics

This unique and far-reaching global outreach raises a question: why aren’t other Sri Lankan political parties, such as the UNP and SJB, engaging in similar international campaigns? Is it a matter of organizational strength, or do Sri Lankans living abroad perceive something in Anura Kumara that they don’t see in Sajith or Ranil? The absence of similar engagement from other parties, who many believe are responsible for the present predicament in Sri Lanka, raises questions about their courage to stand before Sri Lankans abroad. This discussion underscores the structural limitations of Sri Lankan political organizations and highlights the widespread belief that the NPP is the party best positioned to uplift the country. This significance of connecting with the diaspora, which constitutes a significant portion of the nation’s population, cannot be underestimated.

International Concerns and Sri Lankan Assets

Interestingly, many politicians in Sri Lanka, including prominent figures like the Rajapaksas, possess properties in America. Anura Kumara has hinted at the possibility of reclaiming some of these assets if the National People’s Power comes into power. This revelation has raised questions about the financial interests of Sri Lankan politicians abroad and how this might impact the nation’s political landscape. It underscores the contrast between politicians advocating for the return of stolen assets and those who might potentially be affected by such a move.

Anura Kumara’s Successful U.S. Tour

The recent events in Los Angeles and Houston have sparked intense discussions within Sri Lankan society. Of particular note is Anura Kumara’s address in front of the American flag and the implications this holds for Sri Lankan politics. This symbolism underscores his international presence and the expectations placed on him by the diaspora. It’s a striking reminder that Sri Lankans abroad are closely watching and engaging with the political developments in their homeland, with their support seen as a critical factor in shaping the future of the nation.

Sri Lankan Diaspora’s Expectations

The numerous attendees at these meetings, both in the United States and other countries, are driven by a shared hope for a brighter political future in Sri Lanka. They seek clean governance, the eradication of corruption, and a return to a more promising Sri Lanka. The active participation of the diaspora in these events reflects their desire for a Sri Lanka free from the political turmoil and corruption that has plagued the country in recent years. Their expectations are not confined to mere rhetoric but encompass a genuine desire for positive change.

NPP’s Foreign Policy Vision

Anura Kumara’s foreign policy ideas are gaining recognition and endorsement from an informed audience. He emphasizes the significance of maintaining a non-aligned foreign policy that takes into account Sri Lanka’s geographical and geopolitical realities. This vision resonates with a section of the Sri Lankan population who view non-alignment as a way to maintain the country’s sovereignty and protect its interests in an increasingly complex international landscape.

IMF’s Role and Sri Lanka’s Debt Crisis

Anura Kumara’s critique of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and its involvement in Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is noteworthy. He suggests that alternative solutions could have been explored before turning to the IMF and places blame on previous decisions for the country’s current predicament. This critique draws attention to the government’s handling of the economic crisis and raises questions about whether alternative approaches, such as bilateral negotiations, could have mitigated the current financial challenges.

A Call for Renegotiation

Anura Kumara proposes renegotiating the IMF program and highlights the importance of securing a strong mandate for achieving this. He made a heartfelt plea for voters to make informed decisions in the upcoming elections. The call for renegotiation emphasizes the necessity of revisiting agreements that impact the nation’s financial well-being, drawing attention to the potential for change in Sri Lanka’s economic policies.

Sri Lankan Diaspora’s Resilience

Sri Lankans living abroad are keenly aware of these developments and are actively rallying against the political agenda in Sri Lanka. Their determination to protect their homeland is evident, as they seek to hold corrupt politicians accountable and return stolen assets to the people. Their unwavering commitment to this cause highlights their resilience and their readiness to engage in the political discourse, both domestically and from afar.

A press release from JVP regarding the Palestinian-Israeli war conflict

-Colombo, October 31, 2023- As the Palestine Gaza Strip is being ruined relentlessly by Israeli and US war machines, killing a child in every 15 minutes, we, the JVP Sri Lanka, emphasize the need for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and enable food and medical aid convoys to reach the Palestinian people. -Colombo, October 31, 2023-

As the Palestine Gaza Strip is being ruined relentlessly by Israeli and US war machines, killing a child in every 15 minutes, we, the JVP Sri Lanka, emphasize the need for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and enable food and medical aid convoys to reach the Palestinian people.

The inhuman situation in Palestine was created not by the people who were living in Palestine before 1917 and, more accurately, 1948, but by the International community led by the United Nations. Its resolution promised to establish two separate states named Israel and Palestine to solve the tensions created by the infamous British policy of Divide and Rule. However, the United Nations and the International community have not fulfilled their promise to establish an Independent Palestine State even after 75 years. Due to this grave irresponsibility and imperialist politics, generations of Palestinian people, as well as the people of Israel, have been subjected to immense pain and hardships. Due to that, We insist the only solution for this bloody crisis is to establish an Independent Palestine as agreed by almost all Palestinian and Israeli governments, the United Nations and more than 136 countries of the World, including Srilanka.

While we appreciate the adoption of UN Resolution for an immediate ceasefire by the overwhelming majority of the countries of the World with 120 yes and an isolated tiny group of warmongers and its protectorates of US imperialists, it must be needed to say adopting resolutions in New York, and nothing implemented in Palestinian Gaza would become utterly useless. It again shows that the UN has become just a voice that does not have the means to implement its policies due to the imperialist project that has weakened and destroyed UN based system for the last 30 years in a bid to replace it with NATO-led so-called ‘Rules-based International order’, which no one knows any rules of. It is a wake-up call for all the Non Imperialistic sovereign countries to get together to defeat the Imperialist agenda to destroy the UN system (of course, it has many defects).

Also, we take this opportunity to appreciate the UN Secretary-General stating that the present conflict did not occur in a vacuum, thereby stressing the need to address the root cause of the problem and find a permanent solution for the Palestinians’ quest for freedom.

With great enthusiasm, we would like to pay our respect and tribute to the Hundreds of Millions of People of the whole World from Brazil, Washington, London, Roma, South Africa, Kerala, Malaysia to Australia, covering all continents of the World for their solidarity with Palestinian people, which gives enormous moral power to Humanity. We would like to appreciate the brave and humane policy of the hundreds of thousands of Jewish people from all around the World for their solidarity with Palestinian people and saying the Israeli government to ‘NOT IN MY NAME’ a brave slogan used by the progressive people of Europe against Nazi atrocities during the second world war.

As such, we, the JVP Sri Lanka supports,

1. UN resolution to have an immediate Ceasefire

2. The exchange of all prisoners and hostages of both sides as an immediate step to halt the most barbaric war in the 21st century.

Finally, we would like to insist that the only way to establish peace in Palestine and Israel is to implement the Two State Solution, which means establishing a Free, Independent Palestinian state. By doing that, we can end the last colony of Asia and make the People of Israel and Palestine live peacefully side by side.

Sri Lanka’s Democracy Under Siege: The Lurking Shadows of Business-Politics Nexus

-October 29, 2023-

In a startling revelation, Sri Lanka’s infamous businessman Dhammika Perera, who aspires to enter the presidential race, has made a striking statement that should raise alarm bells. According to a recent article by K. Sujeewa in “Anidda” newspaper, published on Sunday, October 29, Perera is willing to pay a significant price for votes, boldly stating, “If SLPP vote base ‘Pohottuwa’ rises to 30%, the remaining 20% will be bought over in cash.” This admission sheds light on a disturbing trend in the country’s politics and the potentially dangerous implications for democracy.

Business Tycoons Eyeing the Presidential Arena

Dhammika Perera is not alone in his quest for political power. Another prominent businessman, Dilith Jayaweera, is reportedly gearing up to join the presidential race. However, their affiliations and motives must be scrutinized. Both Perera and Jayaweera are widely seen as loyalists of the Rajapakse clan, indicating an ongoing attempt by the Rajapaksas to consolidate their power base through unconventional means.

The Wealth Accumulation of Business Titans

These business tycoons have amassed significant wealth, particularly since the Rajapaksas’ rise to power in 2005. As confirmed by the Auditor General, out of the 8 trillion project loans Sri Lanka received by 2015, only 2 trillion worth of assets can be accounted for. This alarming gap begs the question: what happened to the remaining 6 trillion, and how might it be connected to these business figures?

The Controversial Political Entry of Perera and Jayaweera

Dhammika Perera found his way into Sri Lanka’s Parliament, albeit through unconventional means, using a legislative loophole. Dhammika Perera and Dilith Jayaweera’s role in previous elections and their financial investments in political campaigns cannot be ignored. The question arises: how much did these businessmen contribute to bring political leaders like Gotabaya Rajapaksa to power?

Business Interests and Political Favors

The Rajapaksas have shown gratitude to businessmen like Dhammika Perera and Dilith Jayaweera by granting them various favors. For instance, Perera was allowed to run a casino business without impediments, and the recent discussion of a casino tax scandal raises concerns about their influence in government circles. Furthermore, Jayaweera’s pharmaceutical company was granted a lucrative monopoly during the COVID-19 pandemic to import antigen test kits, demonstrating the intertwining of business interests and political decisions.

The Call for Accountability

This ongoing collusion between corrupt businessmen and politicians raises questions about the integrity of Sri Lankan politics. It is imperative that these individuals are held accountable for their actions and that any ill-gotten assets are returned to the public. The need for transparency and justice is paramount.

The Commoditization of Votes

The blatant statement made by Dhammika Perera that he is willing to “buy 20% of the vote in cash” is not only a violation of the Election Law if an election had been declared but also a grave affront to the democratic process. Such remarks reduce the value of the vote to a mere commodity, casting doubt on the integrity of the election system and the politicians involved.

The Transformation of Sri Lankan Politics

The evolution of Sri Lankan politics is evident when comparing politicians from the post-independence era to those who emerged after the 1970s. The latter have relied heavily on financial backing from businessmen to fund their election campaigns. The consequences are far-reaching, as these politicians prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the nation.

The Alarming Mix of Business and Politics

Many individuals with questionable backgrounds and vested interests have found their way into Parliament, including those accused of murder and illicit activities. The intertwining of business interests and political power is a concerning trend that needs to be addressed, as it undermines the principles of democracy.

The Need for Public Accountability

The public must recognize the extent to which business interests are influencing political decisions. The admission by businessmen to buying votes should serve as a wake-up call, prompting voters to demand transparency, accountability, and integrity in their political representatives.

The Decision for Sri Lankan Voters

Sri Lankan voters now face a critical choice: whether to sell their votes to individuals like Dhammika Perera, who see their ballots as commodities, or to reject the influence of corrupt businessmen and politicians who have profited at the expense of the nation. The power to shape the country’s future lies in the hands of the people, and the decision they make in the upcoming election will have far-reaching consequences.

Parliament’s Plunge: From Sanctuary to Arena of Insults and Anarchy

-October 24, 2023-

In recent times, our revered parliamentary chambers, which should serve as sanctuaries for serious debate, have regrettably been marred by the unacceptable behavior of some elected representatives. It appears that Parliament has become a refuge for individuals with questionable backgrounds and ethics.

The Indecent Influx of “Thugs” into Parliament

These social outcasts, who possess ill-gotten wealth in the billions, deploy their financial resources during election campaigns to secure or retain their parliamentary seats. Unfortunately, these parliamentarians often demonstrate a marked ignorance of parliamentary procedures and standing orders, and they seem more interested in enjoying the perks and privileges that come with their positions than in serving the nation and its citizens.

Parliament’s Dwindling Credibility: A Stage for Insults and Personal Attacks

Rather than addressing the critical issues that concern our nation and its people, Parliament has devolved into a platform for ceaseless insults and personal attacks. This trend has significantly diminished the dignity and credibility of our legislative institution. It is indeed disheartening that instances of misconduct by parliamentarians have become all too common, tarnishing the image of our national legislature, which is supposed to be the guardian of our democracy.

A Shocking Incident: Schoolchildren Forced to Flee

A particularly distressing incident involved a group of schoolchildren who were compelled to vacate the public gallery of Parliament due to the unruly conduct of opposition MPs, specifically from the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB). These MPs disrupted proceedings by invading the well of the chamber, displaying a disturbing lack of restraint that compelled the Speaker to suspend one of them for four weeks. Such behavior sets an unfortunate example for our youth, prompting us to question whether it is advisable for teachers to expose their students to parliamentary sessions during such turbulent times.

The Recent Outrage: A State Minister’s Assault

The most recent and unsettling incident involved State Minister Diana Gamage, who alleged that she was assaulted by a male counterpart near the parliamentary chamber. A viral video capturing their altercation displayed a deplorable lack of decorum, with both parties portraying themselves as victims while calling for legal and disciplinary action against each other. Such disgraceful scenes have no place in the halls of governance and epitomize the old adage that “a fish rots from the head down.”

Parliament’s Behavior: Affecting Broader Institutions

It is crucial to recognize that the behavior within Parliament, marked by indiscipline, intolerance of dissent, misogyny, violence, and dereliction of duty, has far-reaching implications for our broader public institutions. If our national legislature fails to uphold discipline, efficiency, and tolerance, it sets a damaging precedent for other institutions.

Past Infractions: A Dangerous Precedent

A particularly egregious example from the past occurred in 2018 when a group of MPs, who now hold positions in the ruling party, unleashed chaos and violence in Parliament. This included the outrageous act of throwing chili powder and damaging parliamentary property. Despite committing non-bailable offenses, these individuals faced minimal consequences, setting a dangerous precedent that further tarnished Parliament’s image. What is even more disheartening is that the constituents of these MPs have reelected them with the highest preferential votes in their respective districts.

Restoring Dignity and Credibility

In conclusion, it is imperative that we address the pressing issue of Parliament’s diminishing decorum and the alarming increase in insults and personal attacks. It is noteworthy to highlight that representatives from the JVP/NPP have been an exception to this trend. Figures like Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Vijitha Herath have served in the legislature for 22 years and have maintained a remarkable track record of adhering to the highest standards of parliamentary procedures. Dr. Harini Amarasooriya, representing the NPP National List for the first time, stands as an example of excellence among women MPs, with her outstanding performance during the last four years.

As constituents, we have the power to choose exemplary individuals to represent us in the legislature. The qualities exhibited by these dedicated representatives serve as a reminder of the kind of leadership we deserve. In the forthcoming elections, we should be discerning in our choices and opt for those who will uphold the dignity and credibility of Parliament, setting a higher standard for our national legislature. Our vote is a powerful instrument for change, and it’s our responsibility to wield it wisely to shape the future of our democracy and our nation.
