A meeting took place this morning at the headquarters of the National People’s Power (NPP), bringing together key representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the NPP leadership.

In attendance were Mr. Christian Skoog, the distinguished Sri Lanka representative, and Mr. Sanjay Weerasekara, the South Asia Regional Director, representing UNICEF. On behalf of the National People’s Power, the delegation included Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Leader of NPP, General Secretary of NPP Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, and Mr. Harshana Nanayakkara, Senior Lawyer and a member of the National Executive Committee of NPP.

The meeting showcased the commitment of both organizations to collaborate on crucial matters concerning child welfare and development. Participants engaged in constructive discussions, highlighting the shared goal of improving the lives of children and youth in Sri Lanka.

This gathering served as a testament to the importance of partnership and collective efforts in addressing the pressing issues affecting the nation’s youth. A significant meeting took place at the National People’s Power (NPP) party headquarters on October 19, 2023, as United States Ambassador for Sri Lanka, Mrs. Julie Chung, convened with the NPP leader, Mr. Anura Dissanayake.

Accompanying Ambassador Chung were U.S. Embassy’s Political Officer, Matthew Hinson, and Political Expert, Nazreen Marikkar. The NPP delegation included Mr. Vijitha Herath, Member of the National Executive Committee and Member of Parliament, as well as Mr. Muditha Nanayakkara, a National Executive Committee Member.

During the meeting, Mr. Dissanayake brought to Ambassador Chung’s attention the urgent need for United Nations intervention to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The ongoing conflict has inflicted a heavy toll on both sides, with innocent civilians, including children and women, bearing the brunt.

In addition to discussing international issues, Mr. Dissanayake highlighted the impact of austerity measures imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility program. These measures have exacerbated the economic challenges faced by the people, and Mr. Dissanayake pointed out the shared responsibility of successive governments in this regard.

Mr. Vijitha Herath raised concerns about attempts by the government to curtail democratic rights. He specifically addressed the postponement of local government elections, the delay in holding provincial council elections, and the looming uncertainty regarding the upcoming presidential election.

Ambassador Chung also took the opportunity to extend her congratulations to Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the NPP leader, for his upcoming visit to the United States, scheduled to commence on October 26, 2023.

Today, on the 18th of October, Anura Dissanayake, Member of Parliament and leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), had an important meeting with Dr. Zuhair M.H. Zeid, the Palestinian Ambassador for Sri Lanka. This meeting took place at the Palestinian Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and it was also attended by Mr. Vijitha Herath, Member of Parliament and member of the NPP National Executive Committee.

During this significant meeting, the NPP conveyed its deep concern to the Palestinian Ambassador regarding the ongoing conflict in Palestine. The NPP expressed its heartfelt condolences for the devastating loss of innocent lives, particularly women and children, and the hardships faced by many others who are grappling with severe shortages of essential resources like water, electricity, food, and healthcare.

Mr. Anura Dissanayake stressed the urgency of a fair and immediate intervention by the United Nations Organization to address the military conflict in the region. He emphasized the need for the United Nations to promptly implement its position of recognizing both Israel and Palestine as two independent nations.

Mr. Dissanayake, who has been a vocal advocate for a free Palestine for an extended period, affirmed the NPP’s unwavering commitment to the fundamental principle that the people of Palestine should have the opportunity to live in freedom and peace.

This meeting between the NPP leadership and the Palestinian Ambassador underscores the NPP’s dedication to global peace and justice, and its solidarity with the Palestinian people during this challenging time. The NPP remains committed to advocating for a just and equitable resolution to the longstanding conflict in the Middle East and stands firmly in support of the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people.

NPP Lawyers has launched an awareness campaign to educate the general public about the adverse repercussions of the Online Safety Bill that has been proposed by the government. On the 17 of October, Lawyers of the NPP distributed handbills around the Fort Railway Station area, and there was a tremendous response from the pubic. Senior Lawyers Harshana Nanayakkara, Sunil Watagala, Janaka Adikari and many others joined the campaign. The lawyers of NPP will organize a series of protest campaigns around the country and will take all possible efforts to defeat the passing of the Online Safety Bill and the Anti Terrorism Bill in the parliament.
